We know that brushing and flossing helps protect our teeth from decay, but what about protecting them from injury or bruxism? For optimal protection against dental injuries during sports or other high-risk activities, a professional mouthguard is ideal!  Sky Creek Dental creates quality, custom-made mouthguards that prevent chips, cracks, wear, and trauma that can occur when the teeth are not properly protected.

Why Your Teeth Need Full Protection

In sports like hockey and football, it’s almost unheard of to not protect the teeth with a mouthguard. But for other sports like basketball or soccer, and even skiing or mountain biking, it is less common to wear a mouthguard and these areas are where we see the most dental injuries occur. However, keep in mind that not just any mouthguard will protect you or your child’s teeth, but the best option is a custom mouthguard created by the experienced professionals at Sky Creek Dental.

Mouthguards don’t only protect you or your child’s teeth, research now shows that mouthguards actually help in the prevention of concussions as well. The better the mouthguard, the larger the decrease in the number of concussions. While mouthguards available for purchase at the store do offer decent protection, dentists and doctors are still seeing injuries occur, as there is just nothing on the market that can offer you the same kind of protection as a custom-fitted mouthguard created by your dentist.

A Custom Mouthguard Could Save You Thousands

Occasionally schools will provide children with mouth guards, and you can even purchase the boil-and-bite mouthguards that give a slightly more custom fit. While these mouthguards are great in theory, they still do not offer the full coverage protection the teeth need. For example, in many cases, when creating the molded mouthguard, children end up biting down too hard which therefore doesn’t leave enough thickness in between the teeth for proper cushioning. A custom-fitted mouthguard can potentially save you or your child from expensive and extensive dental work in the future- it’s all about prevention!

What if A Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

First, take a deep breath! Understand that it is normal for there to be a lot of blood associated with a mouth injury. The first thing you need to do if you or your child’s tooth gets knocked out is to try and put the tooth back in place within an hour. The chances of the tooth surviving after this time period are very slim. It is important to not wash the tooth to avoid destroying the root that is critical to keeping the tooth alive and enabling it to re-bond. If the tooth is covered in dirt or grass, then you can gently rinse it with water, but you must avoid any pressure or scrubbing of the surface. Be sure to always handle the tooth by the crown, or white surface.

If a child is not cooperating in putting the tooth back in place, then you will need to take alternate measures to attempt to preserve the tooth. Saliva is the number one best preservation liquid that the tooth can be kept in to stay alive. The tooth can be held in the mouth unless you are worried about it being a choking hazard for a young child. The next best thing you can do to preserve the tooth is to place it in a container and submerge it in some milk. After you have taken the steps to preserve the tooth, immediately call our office in Keller and we will do everything we can to take care of you or your child.
