What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation simply makes dentistry more comfortable. Not everyone who receives dental care will need sedation dentistry, though many patients can benefit from it regardless of the dental treatment they are to receive. Administered in a variety of ways, sedation dentistry (or sleep dentistry) can help anxious patients relax so they can receive the treatment they need. It can also help the skilled doctors at Sky Creek Dental perform extensive restorative procedures faster and more comfortably, minimizing the amount of time that you must spend in the dental chair.

How to Choose the Right Dental Sedation Method

Sky Creek Dental offers multiple levels of sedation at our office in Keller depending on your needs. As always, Dr. Cornelius and Dr. Belman will address any concerns and recommend the best sedation option for you.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that is inhaled through a nasal mask, allowing you to feel calm and tranquil. Laughing gas has been used safely for decades and produces a light sedative effect. This form of sedation typically wears off immediately once the mask is removed and your procedure is completed, so you can return to your normal activities.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is taken as a pill or liquid and produces a more potent sedative effect than laughing gas. This form of sedation allows you to be very relaxed, without being completely sedated or asleep. Depending on the level of sedation you require, you may need to take a pill the night before your appointment, and then another before the procedure begins. With oral sedation, it may also be necessary for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous sedation is the most powerful form of dental sedation and involves delivering the sedative directly into your bloodstream via an IV. This option is best for those with severe dental anxiety, or those that want to have a lot of work done at once. For optimal safety, our doctors work closely with a trained anesthesiologist who will carefully monitor your vital signs and level of sedation throughout your entire procedure. Though you may feel like you are asleep, you will still remain responsive under IV sedation. This form of sedation requires someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as well as monitor you for a short period of time afterward.
